A 27-year-old male attends the gastroenterology clinic as he has a presumed diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome.  There are no abnormalities on clinical examination of the patient.

Investigations reveal serum bilirubin 35 micromoles per litre. His full blood count and the remainder of his liver function tests are within normal limits.

This patient is most likely to have:

a)      Hepatitis C

b)      Haemachromatosis

c)      Alcoholic cirrhosis

d)      Autoimmune hepatitis
